Dellino Family Law Group and its Seattle family law lawyers recognize that today’s college students come from a wide range of backgrounds, with some students overcoming more challenges than others. The team’s Overcoming Challenges Together scholarship strives to recognize stalwart students who never give up, even when faced with adversity.
This year, the scholarship selection committee with Dellino Family Law Group wants to uplift Jamal Sayid. Sayid’s story and commitment to expanding access to justice moved the team, leading them to award him $2,500 to dedicate toward his continued studies.
Who Is Jamal Sayid?
Jamal Sayid is a college student intent on graduating with a degree in legal studies. He’s taking classes that allow him to hone his ability to analyze complex legal policies and unique cases. When asked, he says that he is “I am particularly interested in how the law intersects with issues of equity, access, and community protection.”
“Through my coursework and professional experiences, I have strengthened my abilities in research, writing, and policy evaluation,” he continues. “These experiences are helping me build the analytical and advocacy tools necessary for advanced legal training and future legal practice.”
Sayid’s intentionality makes all the difference when applying his lessons to real-world situations. His family’s experience makes legal issues concerning immigrant communities and other underserved populations of particular interest to him. He notes that he’s guided “both by personal experience and a clear sense of professional purpose.”
Sayid’s Connection to the Overcoming Challenges Together Scholarship
Sayid’s personal experience with the trials and tribulations that immigrant families can face made the Overcoming Challenges Together scholarship seem like a natural fit for him. He notes that receiving the scholarship has been a “deeply affirming” experience, in addition to one that’s helped alleviate some of the financial stress that comes with going to college.
The scholarship “recognizes the resilience my family and I have demonstrated through difficult circumstances, and it reinforces my commitment to pursuing a legal career rooted in service and advocacy,” Sayid says.
He also notes that the scholarship’s financial aid will make it easier for him to spend more time investing in internships and volunteer work. He’s relieved to have more time to commit to these extracurricular activities in addition to the academic preparation he needs to pursue a career as an attorney.
Sayid in the Community
While Sayid has thoroughly committed himself to his legal education, he’s also made a point to lend a hand to others in need. He regularly volunteers with the American Red Cross, assisting with shelter operations, disaster relief efforts, and community preparedness initiatives.
He also works with Meals on Wheels, ensuring that seniors within his community have regular access to healthy meals. He recognizes that seniors without support can rapidly become isolated, and notes that the experience “has deepened my appreciation for the importance of dignity, consistency, and human connection.”
What’s more, Sayid also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, assisting with neighborhood revitalization efforts while ensuring that people within his community have access to long-term, stable housing.
What to Expect From Jamal Sayid in the Future
While Sayid’s privacy is of the utmost importance to him, he’s made it clear that he plans to pursue a career as a public interest attorney.
He intends to leverage his personal experience and education to serve “underrepresented and historically marginalized communities, particularly immigrant families and individuals navigating complex legal systems without adequate support.” He also hopes to have a direct impact on policy as he advances in his field.
“Whether through nonprofit advocacy, government service, or impact litigation, my goal is to help build systems that are more accessible, fair, and responsive to vulnerable populations,” he says. “My career will be guided by the same principle that shaped my family’s journey: ensuring that people facing difficult circumstances are not navigating those challenges alone.”
